4 Important Tips For IELTS Exam Day

The day of the exam can be nerve-racking. Hear from past IELTS test takers on what they did to stay calm.
For months, you have been preparing from home for the IELTS exam. Now, the big day has finally arrived. What should your approach be? Should you be furiously looking through your flashcards leading up to the start of the exam? Or should you be relaxing and listening to your favorite song?
I had a chance to speak with people who have taken the IELTS exam in the past and got their tips on the best ways to prepare for IELTS exam day.
Get a Good Night’s Sleep
The IELTS exam is nearly three hours long. It’s vital that your mind and body are rested for the exam. Getting a good night’s sleep will help you be awake, focussed, and energized.
Eat Right & Stay Hydrated
During the exam, your mind and body will be working very hard to keep you focussed and energized. In order to sustain this, your body needs food. Before the exam, make sure that you have a meal. One past test taker I spoke to mentioned that one should avoid oily and greasy foods. These types of food may make you feel tired and slow you down during the exam.
Also, stay hydrated. Drink enough water before the exam begins. If needed, bring water to the exam (ensure that you read the rules on what types of bottles you can bring into the exam hall).
Clear Your Mind
According to the test takers I spoke to, it would be a huge mistake to cram for the IELTS on the day of the exam. At this point, you have studied for months. There is no need to digest large amounts of information right before you take the exam. This may make you even more anxious and nervous.
Instead, do something that makes you feel relaxed. Maybe it’s listening to your favorite song, or taking a walk. When you enter the exam hall, you want your mind to be clear.
Watch The Clock
As mentioned in a prior post, you must have a plan in place on how you structure your time. As you go through the writing section, ensure that you are watching the clock. Not being able to finish your essay in the allotted time could negatively impact your score.
